Kitting is one of the most essential workflows in equipment rental. Teams build “kits” that go out together every day—like a skid steer with the right bucket, trailer, and safety gear. Before my involvement, this process was manual, inconsistent across branches, and prone to costly mistakes. My focus was to redesign the entire Kitting experience so teams could create, use, and manage kits at scale with clarity, speed, and confidence.

The Challenge

The toughest challenge was building a modern, scalable Kitting system on top of a product that had grown without structure. Each branch created kits differently, there were no standardized item relationships, and the UI offered little visibility into conflicts or availability. I needed to redesign the workflow from the ground up while also introducing the foundational design patterns that future teams could rely on.

My Approach

I started by mapping the real-world workflow—shadowing branch managers, understanding how kits were assembled, and documenting where errors typically occurred. From there, I defined a clear kit structure (primary equipment, required add-ons, optional upsells) and created reusable templates that branches could share. I added visual hierarchy, conflict detection, and equipment state indicators to reduce mistakes. Finally, I built the Kitting UI on top of a new design-system foundation so the patterns could scale across future modules.

The Results

Kitting became one of the most reliable and widely adopted workflows in the product. Branches now create consistent kits in less time, onboarding takes minutes instead of weeks, and downstream booking errors have decreased significantly. The new system also accelerated future product development by establishing reusable UI patterns that now support multiple areas of the Renterra platform.
